Werner Herzog and desert boots: I like and respect both, and did not expect them to come together the way they do in the video above. In 1978, Errol Morris finished his first documentary Gates of Heaven, winning a years-old bet with Herzog—that when Morris finally completed a film, Herzog would eat his shoes. A man of his word, Herzog flew to Berkeley, cooked his desert boots with Alice Waters at Chez Panisse (in duck fat nonetheless), and ate them on stage at the UC Theater, in part to draw attention to Gates, which had yet to be picked up by a distributor.
Jesse’s posted this before, but it’s worth watching again. As Herzog says in the video, a grown man shouldn’t go a week without cooking a big meal; a grown man shouldn’t go a year without watching Werner Herzog eat his shoe.
