If you’ve been thinking about picking up something nice for yourself, now is a great time to shop. Lots of stores are having their winter sales.
Some generally good guidelines when buying stuff on discount: be aware of the return policy, double check sizing advice/ measurements when you can, and don’t buy something just because it’s on sale. A discounted item is only good insofar that you’ll love wearing it — otherwise it’s money down the drain. That said, it doesn’t hurt to save some money when purchasing a great item. Five sales that I think are particularly worth checking out:
Mr. Porter: Mr. Porter is on their second round of markdowns, with select items discounted as much as 70% off. This tweed Musto coat looks pretty good if you’re into brands such as Barbour. Mr. Porter offers free shipping and returns, even on sale items, so there’s little risk to trying something out. My suggestion is to hit the sale section and just filter by garment type and sizing. You’re more likely to find good stuff that way.
No Man Walks Alone: One of my favorite stores. You’ll find the deepest discounts here on seasonal items — so winter parkas instead of white linen pocket squares. This season’s buys from Inis Meain, Camoshita, and Kaptain Sunshine are particularly worth a look. I also love Sartoria Formosa for suits and sport coats. The cut is distinctively Neapolitan — so, soft shoulders and open quarters — but the slightly extended shoulder line makes these easier to wear. Note, marked down items here are all final sale.
Division Road: Some solid basics from from brands such as APC, Wings + Horns, and Gitman Vintage. I like the textured sweaters, henleys, and wide assortment of button-ups. This striped seersucker shirt looks like it’d be great for the coming spring/ summer seasons.
Drake’s: Drake’s opened a special website this season for their customers based in the United States. The prices are now listed in US dollars and shipping is free (although stuff still comes from Drake’s facilities in the UK). In their sale section, you can find tailored clothes marked down 30%. Trousers start at $227, knitwear at $150, and their famous ties at $122. I’m personally really digging these All Weather sneakers for $228 and crinkly viscose scarves for $130. If you’re in NYC, you can also shop the sale at Drake’s new store on 39 1/2 Crosby Street (pictured above).
Club Monaco: Low-key one of the best places if you’re looking for a deal. Lots of Club Monaco’s items are reasonably well-made without costing a fortune, and they carry some excellent third-party brands (which often get discounted). In their sale section now, for example, you can find wool/ leather Golden Bear varsity jackets for just over $200, Trickers shoes for $250, and Club Monaco’s line of merino knits for $70 (those are a terrific value).
Suitsupply: We often recommend Suitsupply for entry-level suits and sport coats because, from what we’ve seen, they’re still the best in terms of value. They also occasionally open an online outlet store, where you can shop previous seasons’ goods at marked down prices (to get in, use the code FINALSALE). Note, a lot of what’s here is seasonal stuff, so don’t expect staples such as your navy worsteds. That said, at $225 for suits and $180 for sport coats, you could hardly do better. Just ignore the awful product photos — the models are all wearing clothes that are too small for them, and the stuff is terribly styled. And you should probably be familiar with your SuitSupply sizes/ product lines before buying, as these are all final sale.
